Wild Well Control. This company built smaller containment boxes that have been used in shallower waters in the Gulf of Mexico, but this is the first time a box of this size will be used for a spill of this magnitude, and at a depth of about one mile underwater. "We haven't done this before. It's very complex and we can't guarantee it," noted BP spokesman David Nicholas.

The box is expected to collect up to 85% of the oil leaking from the bottom of the sea, and will funnel it up to a tanker on the surface, via a steel pipe. The pipe is not expected to be connected until sometime over the weekend, as the box has to be secured via underwater robotic vessels over the main leak at the bottom of the Gulf.

Fumes are rising from the oily water, and there are concerns that a spark caused by metal scraping on metal could cause a fire. The fumes are also having an effect on the crew of the rig, who are having a hard time working. There is also concern that if the box is not placed precisely over the leak, it could damage the pipe and worsen the spill, although BP does not believe that this box will make things worse.
